Stump Grinding in Atlanta and Marietta, GA
Stump removal for residential and commercial properties across Metro Atlanta.
What Is Stump Grinding?
Stump grinding is the process of using a specialized machine to grind a tree stump down below ground level. The grinder chips the wood into small pieces, leaving behind sawdust and wood chips rather than a solid stump. The roots stay in the ground and decompose on their own over time.
It is faster, less invasive, and more affordable than full stump removal, and it is the right choice for most residential properties.
Why You Should Not Leave a Stump in Your Yard
A stump left in the ground is not just an eyesore. Over time it causes real problems:
Tripping Hazard
Stumps are easy to overlook, especially when grass grows around them or they get partially covered by leaves. They are a risk for anyone walking or running through the yard.
Pest Attraction
Decaying wood draws termites, carpenter ants, and other wood-boring insects. Once they work through the stump, they look for the next source of wood, which is often the house.
Regrowth
A stump that has not been ground down can send up new sprouts from the root system. Those sprouts keep coming back until the root system exhausts itself, which can take years.
Disease Spread
If the tree was removed because of disease, leaving the stump in the ground keeps that disease present in the soil where other trees and plants are rooted.
It Gets in the Way
Stumps make mowing difficult and take up space that could be used for lawn, planting, or landscaping.
Stump Grinding vs. Full Stump Removal
These are two different services and it is worth understanding the difference before deciding.
Stump Grinding
grinds the stump down several inches below grade. The roots stay in the ground and break down naturally over time. It is quicker, less disruptive to the surrounding yard, and costs less than full removal. For most homeowners, this is the practical choice.
Full Stump Removal
extracts the stump and the entire root system from the ground. It requires heavy equipment and leaves a large hole that needs to be filled and restored. The main reason to choose full removal is if you plan to plant a new tree in the exact same spot, since leftover roots from grinding can interfere with new root growth and alter the soil. If you are not sure which option makes sense for your property, call us and we can walk you through it.
How Stump Grinding Works
Step 1: Site Assessment We look at the stump’s size, location, and what is around it before the grinder comes in. Underground utilities, nearby roots, and tight spaces all factor into the approach.
Step 2: Grinding The machine grinds the stump down below ground level, typically six to twelve inches deep. The wood is reduced to chips and sawdust.
Step 3: Cleanup The wood chips can be left behind to fill the hole and decompose into the soil, used as mulch elsewhere in the yard, or hauled away. We go over the options with you before we start.
Step 4: Ground Restoration Once the stump is ground down, the area can be filled with topsoil and reseeded, or prepared for whatever landscaping comes next.
