What Is Tree Trimming?
Tree trimming is the selective removal of branches to keep a tree healthy, safe, and properly shaped. It covers everything from cutting back overgrown limbs to removing dead or diseased wood from the canopy. Done on a regular basis, it extends the life of the tree and prevents the kind of problems that turn into bigger, more expensive jobs down the road.
Signs Your Tree Needs Trimming
Branches on Your Roof or Gutters
Any branch in contact with your house is causing damage, whether you can see it or not. Scraping, moisture buildup, and debris accumulation all follow.
Dead or Hanging Limbs
Dead wood does not fall on a schedule. It comes down in wind, in rain, or on a perfectly calm day. If you can see dead branches in the canopy, they need to come off.
Branches Crossing and Rubbing Together
Where two branches rub, the bark wears away. That open wound becomes an entry point for disease and insects.
Canopy Too Thick
When a tree's crown becomes too dense, air and sunlight stop reaching the interior. That creates the conditions for fungal growth and weakens the branches inside the canopy.
Limbs Near Power Lines
Do not attempt to trim near power lines yourself. Call a professional.
You Cannot Remember the Last Time It Was Trimmed
Most trees should be trimmed every one to three years. If you have lost track, it is time to schedule a visit.
What Tree Trimming Involves
Crown Cleaning
The removal of dead, diseased, and broken branches from throughout the canopy. This is the most common type of trimming and can be done any time of year.
Crown Thinning
Selectively removing branches to reduce the density of the canopy. This improves airflow and light penetration through the tree without changing its overall shape.
Crown Raising
Removing the lower branches to create clearance from the ground. Common for trees near driveways, sidewalks, and structures.
When Is the Right Time to Trim?
For most trees, late winter or early spring before new growth begins is the best window. Trimming during dormancy reduces stress on the tree, slows sap loss, and limits exposure to insects and disease that are drawn to fresh cuts.
That said, dead, damaged, and hazardous branches should be removed as soon as they are spotted. Waiting for the right season does not apply when a limb is already a risk.
Most trees benefit from trimming every one to three years. Fast-growing trees may need attention annually. If you are not sure where your trees stand, we are happy to come out and take a look.
Leave the Ladder in the Garage
Once you are working with branches higher than ten to fifteen feet, or anything that requires a chainsaw or climbing equipment, the job belongs with a professional. Limbs carry more weight than most people expect. A branch that looks manageable from the ground can knock a person down when it falls. Beyond the physical risk, cuts made in the wrong place or at the wrong angle can do lasting damage to the tree.
